 About the Book

Even a casual Bible reader discovers pretty quickly that names in the Bible have meanings, and sometimes these meanings are significant to the stories. It occurred to me long ago that it would be helpful to have the meanings of the names handy when we read the Bible. Why not translate them right in the text, like the rest of the words? Isnt it artificial to use all these meaningless transliterations, as Bibles have traditionally done, which do nothing to convey meaning? So, I set about to reintegrate the meanings of Bible names into the Bible text. Its not a perfect solution, because some names meanings are a little fuzzy, since words can have multiple meanings, and thousands of years have passed since the Bible was written. Many thanks to Prof. Samuel Henry Hooke (1874-1968), whose Bible in Basic English (Public Domain) is often quoted herein. I have also decoded a few theological terms, like God and spirit to see what insights this might bring.. It may be that tradition has so obscured these sacred words that we have little connection with what they meant long ago, when these stories were first told and heard.May we have ears to hear!Reverend Thomas N.
